How it works

What this is: A cryptographic hash is a one-way function that reduces any input to a fixed-size digest. The same input always produces the same digest; any change to the input produces a wildly different digest.
How it works: Uses crypto.subtle.digest(), which runs in constant time on the platform's native crypto implementation. Input is UTF-8 encoded before hashing. Output is either hex (2 chars per byte) or base64 (roughly 4 chars per 3 bytes).
Worked example: SHA-256("hello") = 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824
